Pioneered by
the Egyptians and improved by the Romans, this
form of plastering became known as 'stucco lustro
veneziano' by the Venetians.
Today, Venetian plaster is also
known as Italian plaster, Marble plaster, or
Stucco.
Modern additives have greatly
improved the working characteristics of this
ancient decorative form and Venetian plaster
can now be successfully applied in just three
or four layers.
The surface of the applied plaster
is then hand-polished to a glassy shine with
a small steel blade or trowel.
Because the effect is wholly
hand-crafted it is possible to achieve anything
from a plain, lightly polished surface to a
more highly burred and marbleised effect.
